Cursillo in the Diocese of Southern Virginia

Frequently AskedQuestions

1.  What is Cursillo?

Cursillo is "a short course in Christianity".  The Cursillo weekend is a three day experience of talks, small group discussions, worship and singing.

2.  Who can go to a Cursillo weekend?

Anyone can make a weekend.  You should be attending an Episcopal church, and you should talk with your rector.  You will also need a sponsor: someone who has been to Cursillo and is living the 4th Day.

3.  Why do I need a sponsor?

A sponsor is someone who can help you to prepare for the weekend, and to process it after.  He or she can answer any questions you might have and help you in packing for the weekend.  Your sponsor should help with any arrangements that need to be made, i.e. taking care of any pets while you are away, making arrangements for children to get to and from school, etc.  In addition, your sponsor will be praying for you long before the weekend begins, and will continue to pray for you in your 4th Day.

4.  What is the 4th Day?

Following the 3-day weekend, the 4th day is the rest of your life.  The 4th day is characterized by regular attendance and involvement in an Episcopal church, grouping and Ultreya.

5.  What is grouping?

This is a small group of people that meet weekly for prayer and to support each other in a Rule of Life.  A group can meet just about anywhere, usually for an hour or so.

6.  What is an Ultreya?

Ultreyas are gatherings of people who have been to Cursillo, and people who might be interested in going to Cursillo.  Singing, worship, small group sharing and a talk are all parts of an Ultreya.

7.  Where are the weekends held?

The Cursillo weekends are held at Chanco on the James in Surry, VA.  Surry is directly across the James River from the Jamestown settlement in Williamsburg.

8.  How much does it cost to attend?

The total cost of the weekend is $225; a deposit of $25 must accompany your application with the remainder due upon arrival for the weekend.  Scholarship assistance is available through the Secretariat.

9.  What do I need to bring?

Bring comfortable clothes and shoes, pajamas, a bathrobe, toiletries, a rain coat and a flashlight.  You might also want to bring a Bible, your Prayer Book, and a journal.

10.  Is there anything I should not bring?

Please leave all cell phones, pagers, radios, and other electronic devices at home.  The weekend has been carefully planned out and is best experienced when there are no distractions.  There is a phone in the Chanco Center office for emergency use.

Do you have a question that was notanswered?  Please feel free to contact the
